What was life like with frequent/urgent IBS?

When I first met Mary (name changed for client privacy), she was very upset and frustrated because of her IBS-D. She was finally retired and wanted to live the active lifestyle she was accustomed to. She loved getting out and being active with her husband and her friends. She liked to play golf with her friends on Mondays, tennis at least three times a week, and water aerobics three times a week. She and her also husband loved going out to dinner with other couples. However, she could no longer do the things that she loved because of her fear of having an accident while she was out. If she went out, she had to find the bathroom right away and request a table close by. She stopped traveling because she didn’t always know where bathrooms were. Her frequent and urgent diarrhea made her not want to leave the house.

On top of not wanting to leave the house, Mary’s IBS caused her to be very sick. Sometimes, she would wake up in the middle of the night, having to use the restroom. At times, she had so much pain that she was doubled over in the bathroom for hours, waiting for the pain to pass.

What had Mary already tried?

Mary had been to the Gastroenterologist many times. Several invasive tests had been performed: endoscopy, colonoscopy, EGD. Nothing was ever detected. She started medications but they never helped for long. She had food allergy and sensitivity tests in the past which revealed several foods to avoid, but she never found relief. She had been on a low FODMAP diet for about a year when we met, but she never got any reliable results.

Mary joined our program.

Mary decided to join our Lenio program. She was tested for her inflammatory response to foods as well as micronutrient deficiencies. Once we received her test results, a customized diet was created for her. At first she was hesitant about the list of foods she could eat because many of the foods she was avoiding on low FODMAP were okay for her to eat. But she trusted the process and my guidance and followed the plan.

Mary’s Recovery

We met for her next appointment after Mary was on the diet for 2 weeks. Her diarrhea was completely resolved! She couldn’t believe it! She had no further episodes of waking up in the middle of the night. She was having regular BM’s daily that were not painful or urgent.

After a month, Mary had enough confidence to start playing golf and tennis again. She started water aerobics again. She and her husband started having dinner out with friends again. She knew what she could order at restaurants, and as long as she stuck with her “safe” foods, she had no issues.

Mary came to see me for IBS, but a secondary goal she had was to lose 5-10 pounds. She had been trying to lose these last 5-10 pounds for over 10 years and they just wouldn’t come off. After one month, her weight was down 8 pounds. Weight loss wasn’t the main reason Mary chose to work with me, but it was a bonus result!
